Associate Professor in Health Informatics

Biography

As an associate professor within the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics, predominantly I am teaching, managing projects and conducting research in areas that bring together IT and other sectors (health, manufacturing, business, etc.) in application.

Initially I started as an ICT researcher, where I have explored into how process changes in organisations can have cascading effects into ICT systems within an organisation. The technique of tracking this propagating impact was modelled using Klnee Algebra with Tests (KAT) that allowed capturing process and resource dependencies in full. This in-depth knowledge process analysis was then applied to another project in manufacturing domain. This project explored using genetic algorithm for process optimisations in reducing carbon footprint in manufacturing sector.

Currently I am looking into how process mining and machine learning can be used in healthcare sector. In line with this, I am involved in two major projects: engaging machine learning techniques to improve quality of clinical coding and investigating continues professional development needs of Health Information Professionals in this new technology age. Further I am involved in a major NHMRC funded project named ‘Maintain Your Brian’. Under this project, I am leading an IT team that develop of an extensive software platform that can conduct dementia related clinical interventions in fully online mode.

Further, I am managing software development team that develops and maintains IT systems, which house Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (AR-DRG) Classification System and International Classification of Diseases – version 10 Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM). My involvement in this project is through Australian Consortium for Classification Development (ACCD) that is under contract by Independent Hospital Pricing Authority until July 2017. As a result of this involvement, I am a member of Australian collaborating centre for WHO-FIC (WHO Family of International Classifications), which is headed by AIHW (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare).

My close involvement in health informatics area has led me to be involved in a number of professional committees. These include being a member of Research Advisory Committee for HIMAA (Health Information Management Association of Australia), Tertiary Education sub-committee of HIMAA, and NHMRC National Institute for Dementia Research expert panel on IT. Further I am an entering member into the ISO standard development of Classification Mark-up Language (CLaML), which is led by the Germen Institute for Medical Documentation and Information.

Presently I am organising and teaching subjects mainly in the area of Health Informatics and ICT Capstone projects, backed by my expertise in IT technological subjects such as web technologies and programming. As an academic I have developed numerous number of technical subjects in postgraduate and undergraduate ICT courses. Further as the director of PG-ICT courses in 2013-2014, I have carried out a major revamp of our masters in ICT, introducing a work placement for international PG ICT students, first of its kind in a PG ICT course in Australia. My passion and interest in bringing ICT students closer to the industry while they are studying has won me a number of university awards over the years including the Learning and Teaching Award in 2014 at Western Sydney University.
